The
theme
for this month's activities is creating
Green Celebrations for kids and families.
Activity Treasure Chest for Kids
The activities set out this month are meant to use materials
in your home. Find fun ways to celebrate Spring and Green Living.
Green Invitations
Make green living inspired invitations with your child(ren), to send out
for your celebration, using recycled
paper or an e-mail
service like
www.evite.com.
Recycled Art Exhibit
Encourage each child or family attending your celebration to
bring a 'recycled statue' from home, using items from
their recycling bin. Create a display area in advance
to set down the pieces as your young guests arrive. You may even ask each child or family to
present their sculpture to the group.
Nature Scavenger Hunt
Prepare a list of items from nature for each child and/or family to collect, i.e. an acorn, twig, maple
leaf, rock. Then give each child or family a paper bag in which to place the
items on their list. At the end of the session have fun comparing your natural
treasures. Adult supervision is recommended to help children
identify safe items.
Nature Painting
Use the items collected in the scavenger hunt to create paintings. Put out
paper and plates of paint, and let each child dip their collected items in the
paint as their 'brushes' to create interesting textures in their one-of-a-kind
designs.
Cooking
Naturally
Cut up fruits and vegetables in different shapes
and sizes and place them on trays, along with bowls of edible seeds (i.e.
pumpkin and sunflower seeds).
Give each child a plate, and let him/her form a picture using the different
shapes available. Discuss the many ways in which we benefit from farming and the earth. Then
let the children enjoy eating their cooking creations.
